Lenore is the main protagonist of the Nevermore webcomic. She has a massive savior complex, sticking her neck out on many occasions to save characters who do not need, or want to be, saved. She is constantly portrayed as imperfect, the exact opposite of her love interest, Annabel Lee. As of writing this, she does not yet have her spectre.
Lenore’s original story is a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, titled “Lenore”. The poem discusses themes of grief and mourning. A character by the name of “Guy de Vere” struggles with the death of his fiancée, Lenore, refusing to follow the traditional mourning customs at her funeral. He does not cry, but he celebrates her ascension to heaven instead. He lashes out at the chorus as they urge him to weep. Poe writes, “False friends! ye loved her for her wealth / And hated her for her pride, / And, when she fell in feeble health, / Ye blessed her — that she died.” (stanza 2). This poem touches on the idea of a happy afterlife, which Guy de Vere embraces.
The funeral scene of the poem could be compared with the funeral for Theo, Lenore's brother, in episode 21 of Nevermore. The people attending the funeral talk about how unfortunate his death is, speaking of how it is hopeless to carry on the bloodline of the prominent Vandernacht family. They talk about how ghastly it is to even look at Lenore. The attendees only speak of the wealth of the Vandernachts and how tragic it is that the family bloodline will end soon, comparable to the original poem when Guy de Vere lashes out at the attendees of Lenore’s funeral, telling them they only cared for her wealth.
The theme of celebrating death is also seen in the dreamland episodes when Duke accepts that he may die soon, and there is nothing that can be done at that moment. In episode 78, when Lenore is panicking, trying to think of a plan to save Duke, Duke simply says, “What’s the point in agonizing over the inevitable when we could be celebrating instead!?”
Lenore Vandernacht is a very pale woman with shaggy, neck-length hair that is usually in a ponytail. Her hair color is black with white hair on the inside. In episode 8, we see in a flashback that Lenore used to have all black hair. In episode 21, Lenore has white hair on the inside of her black hair after being mistreated and locked in the attic, which suggests that the white hair resulted from stress. Lenore has light blue eyes with three prominent lower lashes, similar to Duke's, only she has more than three. Her more noticeable facial feature is the black dots she has on each eye. Lenore is quite tall, at a height of 6 feet, and has many masculine features, such as broad shoulders and sharper facial features. Her sharper facial features may make her appear nefarious, however, she is quite the opposite, unlike Montresor, who has sharp facial features and is antagonistic.
Lenore wears a white button-up shirt with a cravat and ruffled sleeves. Over this shirt, she wears a black blazer with long coattails. The ruffles of the sleeves of her shirt peek out from under the sleeves of her blazer, which has turned-up cuffs. She and all the other students have the Nevermore emblem on the back of their blazers. Her shirt is tucked into a pair of white slacks that are tucked into a pair of black, calf-high boots with white buttons. All of the students also have the boots in common.
Before she chopped off all of her hair, she had very long hair that went down to the middle of her back. She would dress in clothing appropriate for women in the Victorian era. That was until Annabel Lee left her alone again to be trapped in a marriage. Lenore thinks she can save Annabel Lee from her marriage, and disguises herself as a man. She chops off all of her hair and wears a suit. Lenore dressing as the opposite gender is a very important aspect of her character. She knows about the trouble she could get into by getting caught marrying a woman as a woman, but she does it anyway for Annabel Lee. She takes on the persona of “Leo”, cousin of Theo Vandernacht. This is why she dresses as she does in Nevermore.
Lenore’s true death has not yet been revealed. She does not have a spectre to hint at what her death could be, nor has there been any explicit hint about what her death could be.
